After a water disaster, such as flooding or a broken pipe, water damage can be devastating and there is a risk of harmful bacterial growth. Call ServiceMaster Advanced Restorations immediately to maximize your potential for a complete recovery. Our technicians are on-call 24/7/365. Here are a few tips from the experts to help keep you safe and increase the effectiveness of your restoration.
What to do for water damage:
- Water damage sets in immediately after a water disaster, and bacteria growth begins in the first few hours if they are not properly cared for. Call ServiceMaster Advanced Restorations immediately.
- Shut off the flow of water at the source.
- Mop or blot up as much of the water as you can.
- Move area rugs or other un-attached floor coverings to dry spaces.
- Floor-length curtains are in danger of being damaged as well. Lift them well above the wet surfaces and loop them through a coat hanger or over the curtain rod.
- Place foil or specially designed blocks under furniture legs to lift them off of wet surfaces, wipe down furniture, and place wet pillows or couch cushions for increased, even air flow.
- Wipe furniture, prop up wet furniture cushions for even drying and place aluminum foil under furniture legs or elevate furniture from water exposure.
- Move photos, paintings and art objects to a safe, dry location.
- Do not remove books from shelves. Rather, pack them tightly to prevent warping of pages until a restoration professional can begin this specialized drying.
- Open drawers, closet and cabinet doors to enhance drying.
What not to do:
- Do not enter a room with standing water while the electricity is still running.
- Do not attempt to extract water with a regular household vacuum.
- Do not lift tacked-down carpet yourself—this requires professional expertise.
- Do not stand on wet carpeting or flooring while electrical appliances are switched on.
- Do not disturb visible mold.
- Do not enter rooms with wet or sagging ceilings, and leave any fans or lights on the ceiling shut off.
